Rotary Tables and Turntables: Safe and Maintenance-Free Wireless Control for Rotating Equipment

R3 Solutions provides the wireless technology that transmits control and safety signals contactlessly to rotating plant components. No slip rings, no wear, and no associated downtime.

Overview

Rotating system components present a unique challenge in automation. Rotary tables, turntables, and similar components rotate continuously or in cycles, and this is precisely what makes fixed cabling impossible: a cable would twist and break.

The traditional solution to this problem is the slip ring. It transmits data via mechanical brushes and conductive rings that are in constant frictional contact. This contact wears out over time. The result is a need for regular maintenance, potential signal interference, and failures that halt production. A wireless control system transmits the same signals contactlessly, thereby circumventing the wear-and-tear problem. This is a decisive advantage, especially in applications where safety signals must be transmitted via the rotary axis in addition to control signals.

Typical Challenges in the Industry

Cables are not an option during rotation

The continuous rotational motion makes fixed cabling impossible. A cable would become twisted and damaged.

Continuous Wear on Sliding Rings

The mechanical brushes and contacts of a slip ring wear out due to constant frictional contact. This results in recurring maintenance and is a common source of failure.

Safety signals via the rotational axis

When safety protocols such as CIP Safety must be transmitted via the rotating interface, the highest reliability requirements apply. Any interruption is unacceptable.

High Total Cost of Ownership for Mechanical Solutions

Maintenance, replacement parts, and unplanned downtime add up to significant costs over the lifetime of a slip ring-based system.

How R3 Solves the Challenges

R3 Solutions replaces the wear-prone mechanical transmission with a dedicated wireless connection that transmits control and safety signals contactlessly across the rotational axis. Reliable, deterministic, and without moving parts subject to wear.

Bridge E

For safety and control applications with real-time requirements and high synchronization.

  • Determinism: Time-slot-based signal transmission, packet loss rate of 0.000000001 %.
  • Real-time communication: Latencies of up to 2 milliseconds are possible.
  • Safety-compliant: PROFIsafe, CIP Safety, and others are transmitted transparently.
  • Proven in practice: Years of use by European and American OEMs.

Wireless Robot Control for Auto Body Shops

In auto body manufacturing, robots equipped with grippers perform key work steps. The gripper control system relies on cables and connectors that are subject to regular wear and tear. If these fail during continuous operation, the system comes to a standstill, resulting in enormous follow-up costs.
