Use Case — Intralogistics

AGV & AMR: Roaming and Functional Safety for Your Intralogistics Application

R3 Solutions provides wireless technology that coordinates individual AGVs and AMRs—or even entire fleets—safely, synchronously, and without failure, even in the harshest industrial environments.

Overview

AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) and AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots)—also known as FTS/FTF in German—are only as good as their wireless communication. Motion and coordination data, sensor data, and—in special cases—safety functions (e.g., emergency stop) must be transmitted reliably, sometimes under real-time requirements. As the number of vehicles grows, the demands increase exponentially.

Typical Challenges in the Industry

Integration of Various Networks

The battery management system communicates via CAN bus; the Ethernet controller requires Wi-Fi; safety protocols use CIP Safety, PROFIsafe, or similar standards. The various networks should be integrated as leanly as possible and without interference.

Advanced Data Management

Data—for example, for battery management—must be transmitted. (advanced data transfer)

Mobile Functional Safety

When humans and machines work together, safety must be 100% guaranteed at all times (remote emergency stop, communication with local functional safety systems, etc.).

Seamless Roaming

Switching between individual radio cells must not become a bottleneck and thus jeopardize the performance of a fleet. Deterministic radio communication ensures maximum independence for AGVs/AMRs.

Virtual Axis

Motion and telemetry data must be transmitted in real time so that fleets can be coordinated collectively. For example, when multiple AMRs move heavy loads together, they must be controlled with millimeter precision and high synchronization.

Fleet Management

Efficient configuration and control of AMR/AGV fleets via standard interfaces (gNMI/netconf) and standardized scripts (IT/OT integration).

How R3 Solves These Challenges

The R3 product portfolio is tailored to the typical challenges of intralogistics, such as data transmission for control systems, functional safety applications, and broadband communication.

Edge X

For advanced requirements that demand higher bandwidths and the integration of different protocols.

Bridge E

For safety and control applications with real-time requirements and high synchronization.

  • Determinism: Time-slot-based signal transmission, packet loss rate of 0.000000001 %.
  • Real-time communication: Latencies of up to 2 milliseconds are possible.
  • Safety-compliant: PROFIsafe, CIP Safety, and others are transmitted transparently.
  • Proven in practice: Years of use by European and American OEMs.

Typical Project Workflow

Project analysis, functional safety requirements, protocol selection.

Network Solution Plan

Traffic analysis, channel planning, configuration details.

Deployment

Installation, functional safety testing, acceptance testing.

Support & Maintenance

Monitoring, firmware updates, and enhancements.

Success Stories

Collaborative AGVs in the Cleanroom

Large-format, highly sensitive workpieces often cannot be transported by a single vehicle. In the cleanroom of an optical systems manufacturer, two AGVs therefore handle the transport together, connected to each other via real-time radio communication through a virtual drawbar. Precisely controlled, highly cooperative, and with all necessary safety precautions in place.
