Cable cars – Wireless Communication for Cable cars and Funicular Systems Without Outages

R3 Solutions provides the radio technology that reliably transmits control and safety signals between cars and the track. For safe, uninterrupted operation and a comfortable ride without unnecessary safety stops.

Overview

Cable cars and funiculars transport people, often as an integral part of public transit, around the clock. This places special demands on communication between moving cars and the track infrastructure: control and safety signals must be transmitted reliably at all times, because every passenger relies on them.

The route configuration makes this a challenging task. Cars travel along long sections, some of which have varying topography, where mechanical transmission methods such as sliding contacts or powerline communication reach their limits or are completely ruled out. A wireless solution reliably transmits the signals along the entire route. It is crucial that the connection remains stable even during operation, as unstable communication leads to safety stops, which are equally inconvenient for passengers and operators.

Typical Challenges in the Industry

The Highest Safety Standards for Passenger Transport

Safety functions such as emergency stops and car status monitoring must be reliably communicated at all times. People’s safety is at stake.

Consistent availability in regular service

Local transit cable cars often operate around the clock. Unreliable communication leads to safety stops and significantly disrupts operations.

Challenging route

Long and varied route sections often rule out mechanical transmission methods such as sliding contacts or powerline communication.

Seamless transition along the entire route

Moving cars must remain connected to the track infrastructure continuously and without interruption, even when switching between track sections.

Transparency Regarding Network Status

Operators need insight into the status of the radio network to detect potential problems early, before they disrupt operations.

How R3 Solves the Challenges

R3 Solutions designs a dedicated wireless network architecture for cable car and funicular systems that transmits control and safety signals deterministically and without failures along the entire route. This includes a monitoring solution that shows the operator the status of the network at all times.

Bridge E

For safety and control applications with real-time requirements and high synchronization.

  • Determinism: Time-slot-based signal transmission, packet loss rate of 0.000000001 %.
  • Real-time communication: Latencies of up to 2 milliseconds are possible.
  • Safety-compliant: PROFIsafe, CIP Safety, and others are transmitted transparently.
  • Proven in practice: Years of use by European and American OEMs.

Success Stories

Historic Funicular in Porto

The “Funicular dos Guindais” is a historic funicular in Porto that has been reliably transporting tourists from the banks of the Douro River to Batalha Square since its completion at the end of the 19th century. As part of a general overhaul, the control and safety communication systems for the funicular’s two cars had to be modernized.

Reliable Radio Control for the "Götterflug" Ride

The “Götterflug” at Belantis Park in Leipzig is a flying carousel in which passengers in 16 gondolas, at a height of about 25 meters and traveling at approximately 50 km/h, can control their flight themselves using small wings attached to their seats. The reliability and maximum safety of the attraction must be guaranteed at all times.
