Rides: Reliable Control and Safety Communication for High-Speed Attractions

R3 Solutions provides the wireless technology that reliably transmits control and safety signals even at high speeds and on moving parts of the ride. For roller coasters, carousels, and flight attractions that operate safely and without interruption.

Overview

Amusement rides move people at high speeds, at heights, in spins, and in free fall. Whether it’s a roller coaster, a carousel, or a rotating flight ride: the control system must function precisely and safely at all times, because the safety of the passengers is at stake.

This makes communication between the moving parts of the ride and the central control system challenging. The transmission paths are constantly changing—for example, with rotating arms or trains on the track—and often in an environment that is difficult for radio communication due to metal structures and signal shadowing. Traditional mechanical transmission methods, such as sliding contacts, reach their limits here and are subject to high wear and tear. A wireless solution transmits signals reliably and flexibly, but must achieve the deterministic reliability of a cable connection, even at high speeds and with constantly changing geometry.

Typical Industry Challenges

Passenger Safety

Safety functions and reliable data exchange with the safety PLC must be guaranteed at all times. People’s lives are at stake.

High speed and moving parts

Rotating arms or fast-moving trains result in constantly changing transmission paths. The connection must nevertheless remain stable and free of delays.

Demanding HF Environment

Metal structures and tight geometries cause signal shadowing. Standard wireless solutions can reach their limits here.

Minimal downtime, even during retrofits

Attractions should be available as continuously as possible. Even a control system modernization should have only a minimal impact on operations.

Wear in Mechanical Transmission Systems

Slip ring systems on moving parts wear out over time, leading to maintenance costs and downtime.

How R3 Solves the Challenges

R3 Solutions connects the moving parts of a ride to the central PLC in a deterministic and secure manner via a dedicated radio link. The solution is designed to operate reliably even at high speeds, with changing geometry, and in environments that are challenging for radio communication.

Bridge E

For safety and control applications with real-time requirements and high synchronization.

  • Determinism: Time-slot-based signal transmission, packet loss rate of 0.000000001 %.
  • Real-time communication: Latencies of up to 2 milliseconds are possible.
  • Safety-compliant: PROFIsafe, CIP Safety, and others are transmitted transparently.
  • Proven in practice: Years of use by European and American OEMs.

Typical Project Workflow

Project analysis, functional safety requirements, protocol selection.

Network Solution Plan

Traffic analysis, channel planning, configuration details.

Deployment

Installation, functional safety testing, acceptance testing.

Support & Maintenance

Monitoring, firmware updates, and enhancements.

Success Stories

Historic Funicular in Porto

The “Funicular dos Guindais” is a historic funicular in Porto that has been reliably transporting tourists from the banks of the Douro River to Batalha Square since its completion at the end of the 19th century. As part of a general overhaul, the control and safety communication systems for the funicular’s two cars had to be modernized.

Reliable Radio Control for the "Götterflug" Ride

The “Götterflug” at Belantis Park in Leipzig is a flying carousel in which passengers in 16 gondolas, at a height of about 25 meters and traveling at approximately 50 km/h, can control their flight themselves using small wings attached to their seats. The reliability and maximum safety of the attraction must be guaranteed at all times.
