Collaborating AGVs in Clean Room

The challenge

Two AGVs (automated guided vehicles) are to move in coordination with each other in such a way that they are connected as if by a physical drawbar (rigid connection/rod). This is necessary so that they can jointly transport large, highly sensitive workpieces, such as aircraft wings, in a clean room without damage.

Our action

Stäubli equips its AGVs as standard with a Safety PLC, which is responsible for the movement of the AGV, and a Bridge E. The Safety PLCs of the AGVs involved exchange control and safety data deterministically via PROFINET/PROFIsafe with a cycle time of 32 ms and metadata via TCP/IP.

All data streams are transmitted directly from AGV to AGV via Bridge E, i.e. using EchoRing technology. This means that no additional infrastructure is required.

Business impact

Stäubli can deliver its cooperating AGVs to customers without having to rely on a customer network. Thanks to the direct connection provided by Bridge E, the AGVs can transfer all data with high reliability, low latency and low energy consumption via a single interface.

Traffic: PROFIsafe / TCP/IP (non-time critical)
Latency: 32 ms
Coverage: Only between AGVs (short distance)
Roaming: No
Network: 4 devices
